EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick is ready to plunge Jay Mitchells character into new dark territories, with the actor hinting the former mechanic could become a heroin addict.

It doesnt get much darker does it?

The funeral home director has been involved in some of the BBC One shows grittiest storylines, such as becoming an orphan, covering up the murder of Heather Trott and, lets not forget, ending up on the sex offenders register after learning his girlfriend was underage.

But apparently, none of that is depressing enough for Jamie, 24, who cant wait to sink his teeth into something meatier.

I like doing heavy, dramatic stuff so, I dont know, make me a heroin addict or something. Let me shave all my hair off and make me go mad. Why not?

Lets just go into the depths of darkness, thatd be fun.

Now that would be an interesting watch. Jamie could always call on Steve McFadden for tips given the actors years of experience playing Phil Mitchell as an alcoholic and cocaine addict.

Until then, it looks like romance could be on the horizon for Jay with rumours rife that love will blossom between him and Ruby Allen, played by Louisa Lytton.

Viewers recently saw Jay ask Ruby out on a date, which she rejected, but EastEnders fans are still shipping the pair.

Jamie remained coy about the possibility of romance but he did teasingly speak highly of working with Louisa, saying: I kind of what to leave it out there, I dont want to give too much away but weve done some really nice scenes and shes a superstar.

Shes lovely, we get on really really well so who knows? Watch this space.

Oh dont you worry Jamie, we will be.

Louisa has earned critical-acclaim for her performance during Rubys consent storyline, which culminated in a harrowing episode highlighting the different perspectives on the issue.

Praising the rape storyline, Jamie told us: I wasnt involved in the actual episode but I watched it and thought it went down really well.

He added: EastEnders raises these issues and tackles them really well I think. Whatever the subject matter is, and I think this is a really good subject matter, so Im a great fan of it. I thought it was brilliant and another well-played ep.
