Damien Cook commits to five-year $4.5m deal at Souths

Damien Cook will remain at South Sydney after agreeing to terms on a five-year, $4.5 million contract extension.

Just one day after unveiling Wayne Bennett as their new coach, the Rabbitohs have received a further boost with the retention of the Kangaroos hooker.

Cook was one of the most sought-after stars on the open market, attracting interest from Wests Tigers, Newcastle and Parramatta. However, the speedy dummy halfs preference was always to stay put and the parties nutted out the deal on Wednesday morning.

Cook began the season in a dogfight for the Souths No.9 jersey with Robbie Farah. However, his stocks rose after a remarkable season that included being part of the victorious NSW side and then replacing Cameron Smith as the Australian rake.

Bennett made no apologies for being in touch with Cook while he was still at Brisbane after receiving permission from Souths supremo Shane Richardson to do so.

The seven-time premiership-winning coach made it clear he wanted Cook to be part of his side and has again gotten his man.

Cooks retention is a massive boost for the Rabbitohs ahead of the premiership campaign and provides further stability for one of the premiership heavyweights.
