The cosmic ambitions of Captain Marvel are front-and-center in the new trailer, which premiered at halftime of ESPNs Monday Night Football game between the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.
Captain Marvel, the 21st film from Marvel Studios, reaches theaters on March 8. The film stars Brie Larson as the title character, who has been described as the single most powerful hero in Marvels interlocking screen mythology, which includes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther.
In the pages of Marvel Comics the hero called Captain Marvel dates back to Marvel Super-Heroes No. 12, cover-dated December 1967. That character, a brainchild of the late Stan Lee, was introduced as a male warrior of the alien Kree race whose birth-name, Mar-Vell, was mispronounced by Earthlings leading to his similar-sounding superhero moniker.
Mar-Vell was originally dispatched to Earth to assess the planets threat potential and strategic value. The stakes are high since the Kree are locked in a bitter space war with the rapacious, shape-shifting race called the Skrull so Mar-Vell covers his activities by assuming the identity of a dead scientist named Walter Lawson.
Larson portrays Carol Danvers, who was introduced in Marvel Super-Heroes No. 13 (cover dated March 1968) as an officer in the U.S. Air Force who works with Lawson. The pair are together when Lawson is attacked and Danvers is nearly killed in an explosion that instead infuses her with Mar-Vells powers. Danvers became a superhero herself in 1977 with her own comic book series, Ms. Marvel, which was from the team of writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan.
Threads from those vintage comic book stories are woven into the movies screenplay, which was written by Boden, Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jac Schaffer. Jude Law portrays Mar-Vell and Walter Lawson in the film.
Samuel L. Jackson reprises his familiar Marvel Studios role as Nick Fury, although this time around he is “aged down” by CG effects to look younger for the story (which is set in the 1990s). Also returning to screen action for Marvel: Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson.
The cast also includes Djimon Hounsou, Rune Temte, Mckenna Grace, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn and Annette Bening.
