Downs victorious in Equatorial Guinea

Cape Town – Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a 2-0 CAF Champions League victory over Leones Vegetarianos on Wednesday.

Playing at the Nuevo Estadio de Ebebiyin in Equatorial Guinea, goals from Jeremy Brockie and Themba Zwane secured the win from this first leg clash.

Gaston Sirino was first with a chance for Sundowns on five minutes with a shot that was well held by the home goalkeeper.

Zwane then played a super ball down the left-hand side but Mosa Lebusa was unable to make the most of his cross.

But it didn't take long for Downs to claim the advantage as Brockie fired home on the volley from an excellent ball in from Lebusa.

Rivaldo Coetzee, back after a long lay-off, was off target with a shot soon after as Brockie smashed against the crossbar, with Sirino the provider this time.

Sundowns were eager for a second, but Zwane was unable find his range as the half wore to a close.

Sirino tried his luck with a powerful drive from range in the opening minutes of the second half, while the same player was just wide after some good approach play.

Hlompho Kekana's mandatory long–range effort wasn't too far away as Sundowns bossed the tie, ahead of Zwane's neat finish after a clever pass from Lebohang Maboe.

The away side continued to create chances, with Maboe close late on as the match ultimately ended with a two-goal advantage to the Premiership team.
