Last week a group of excited Year 12 Margaret River SHS students set off on the first leg of a journey that will see them experience life in remote East Timorese communities, catching their bus to take them up to Perth, and then by plane to Darwin and Dili in Timor Leste. Accompanied by four supervisors representing the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Margaret River, the group jumped on a bus to Perth, before boarding a plane to Darwin and on to Dili. Both clubs help to support the travel group and facilitate projects during the tour, while the students are responsible for their own airfares. According to a Rotary spokesperson, students will work in a number of local communities. ”They will travel to Atauro and Bacau to work on projects including a recycling plant, building playgrounds and maintenance work. “In Bacau we will be staying at the local Carmelite seminary in which conditions are second world, but adequate – a great opportunity to appreciate our modern comforts, and youre woken by celestial singing from their 4am Church mass!” The group was led by Rotarians Brian and Lynne Warren, and supported by Gudren Hangarten, Allan Walley and previous student volunteer Ladriel Hackett. “This program continues to provide a very meaningful alternative to graduating students who have wholeheartedly embraced the concept of doing good. They are a credit to their parents and community. We wish them a safe and successful journey.”
