Kelly Rowland is black and proud, OK.

The former Destinys Child singer released her brand new single this week, titled Kelly, and appears to have hit back at critics who accused her of skin bleaching earlier this month.

In a not-so-subtle clap back, Kelly opens with the R&B singer celebrating her dark skin.

Lyrics include: My skin is my cape, huh, My black is my bitch, huh/ Natural face, huh, Thats how I wake up/ No love for the fake ones.

Safe to say the message is pretty clear on that subject.

The Kelly single cover features the musician posing topless and embracing her body with her hands, with her back turned away from the camera.

Its possible that Kelly, 37, made sure to include the black empowerment lyrics last minute after she was accused of lightening her skin in a professional photo shoot.

The singer posted a close-up picture on Instagram with many believing her skin was several shades lighter.

However, Kelly responded to the accusations in a series of impassioned Instagram Stories, saying she was proud of her chocolate skin.

The posts read: I am not the one to bleach my skin, nor do I want to bleach my skin, nor do I have to bleach my skin, I dont even think that – its not for me.

Dont go saying stupid stuff like that. You ever thought that it could be the lighting?

She added: I am still chocolate, forever chocolate, proud to be chocolate, shout out to all my chocolate girls.

Skin lightening within the black community has been a controversial topic of late.

Last month, Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star Spice sparked outrage when she appeared to have bleached her entire body. However, it was revealed to be a stunt in promotion of her new single Hypocrisy, which sheds light on the issue of colourism.

This week, Blac Chyna also found herself at the centre of skin bleaching backlash when she promoted a lightening cream on Instagram.

The model is now the face of Whitenicious and will be flying out to Nigeria to promote the brand at its store. However, Blacs reps were forced to deny initial reports that she has used the skin lightening cream herself for a few years.
