Mens Shed members breathe easy with new upgrades
Members of Cowaramup Mens Shed can now breathe easier thanks to installation of a new ducted dust extraction system funded by a $15,000 grant from Lotterywest. According to President Peter Clews, the improvement is already being recognised. “Our regular members have commented on how much cleaner and quieter the woodworking area is now and the new system is working well,” Mr Clews said. A Royalties for Regions grant funded a $25,000 shed extension, and the extractor unit has been located externally, making more workspace inside as well as significantly decreasing dust and noise levels. Grants Officer Jack Carlsen said the funding recognised the importance of Mens Sheds in supporting community engagement and improving health and well-being for members. “Providing a safe and clean work space contributes to those goals and it is really good that we can now provide a space that meets all of the requirements in terms of safe air quality and noise levels. The last thing we wanted was to make members uncomfortable when working on their projects”. Activity and attendance has increased in preparation for the Cowaramup Christmas Fair on November 25. There are plans in place to construct a replica railway station and historical display behind the Mens Shed, as well as supporting the Lions Club in their Community Garden Project on the adjacent Lot. Funding is also being sought for expansion of the Mens Shed meeting room and kitchen area, to cater for the growing membership of both men and women from Cowaramup and surrounding areas.
