An organisation addressing the elephant in the room, starting conversations around mental ill health, are travelling to regional and remote areas in central and north west NSW to Get Talkin.

Statistics show one in 5 Australians will experience a mental health condition in any given year, and its particularly challenging for young Australians living in regional and remote areas, which media, marketing and communications manager at Batyr Jenya Kalagurgevic said is why Batyre need to get people talking.

“There are a lot of statistics around of there being greater challenges for young people in regional and remote areas, and that theres a higher prevalence of mental ill health,” Ms Kalagurgevic said.

“That combined with the recent drought in NSW we just saw a real need for us to get out there and be doing something to support them.”

Batyr teamed up with NSW Positive Rugby Foundation to travel around to 10 towns for the Get Talkin tour, running 30 plus events including community forums, school programs and positive rugby sessions.

“Weve partnered with NSW Positive Rugby Foundation so they have a presence in a lot of these communities with the local rugby clubs,” Ms Kalagurgevic

“With them were going to into these communities to run events, to essentially start a conversation around mental health and give them the tools and resources to take charge of their mental health,” she said.

And it doesnt stop just there, Ms Kalagurgevic said Batyr are also working with the community to ensure communities support young peoples mental health and wellbeing.

“Were also doing some training so that in these local areas we can have a mental health advocate, or Get Talking ambassador so they can be skilled up with mental health literacy and the services that are available in their towns.”

The Get Talkin Tour kicks off in Orange on Saturday and will travel to Cowra, Dubbo, Walgett, and Narrabri.

The Get Talkin tour event is free and all members of the community are welcome.

  • Orange – Saturday, November 17 (9.30am Classic Wallabies Event, Endeavour Oval)
