JEDDAH: Growing demands placed on police and security services in the Arab region expose them to considerable psychological pressures and support must be provided in order to help them continue to perform their duties, the 7th Arab conference of the heads of their social and health care departments heard at a conference on Wednesday.
The conference, which kicked off at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in Tunis, brought together representatives of Arab interior ministries, the League of Arab States, and Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS).
The Saudi delegation to the conference was headed by the deputy director of the General Department of Medical Services (GDMS) of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Tariq Al-Aesh.
In his opening speech, the councils secretary-general, Mohammed bin Ali Koman, said that the security situation in the Arab region is still delicate, placing police and security officers under growing responsibilities and exposing them to considerable psychological and physical pressure.
“This requires official institutions and civil society to appreciate the police and security officers sacrifices, which are important for the security of our countries and the safety of our citizens, in addition to providing psychological, social and health care to alleviate their suffering and help them perform their duties efficiently,” he said.
Koman added that the councils decision to hold this conference every year, announced during the previous session, is an acknowledgement of the difficulties faced by the security services and a sign of the councils commitment to improving support for security officers as they perform their vital duties, fighting crime and maintaining security and stability in the Arab world.
He stressed the need to support security officers to deal with the tough nature of their jobs and cope with the psychological crises that result from the constant pressures and shocks they experience as they tackle criminal violence.
Koman said that due to the nature of security work and the stressful environment that requires high endurance and the ability to adapt, it was necessary to consider security officers psychological needs in their challenging working environments.
He stressed the importance of amending the Arab model for assessing those who wish to join the police and security forces in Arab countries. Criteria should be amended to take account of the special abilities required by these personnel working in positions that demand high endurance, selflessness and a willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good of society.
The conference considered developing a guide for the psychological attributes security officers need, an Arab model for assessing those who wish to join police and security forces in Arab countries, and a model of how to structure a department specializing in psychological counseling of security service officials.
