After fans cottoned on to the fact Professor Minerva McGonagall will be in the next Fantastic Beasts instalment, The Crimes of Grindelwald, the internet has erupted into a boiling pot of theories.

You see, in the year the movie is set, 1927, McGonagall wasnt even born, let alone a functioning wizard with any real knack for wielding a wand.

Prof McGonagall is widely considered by fans to have actually been born in October 1935, which muddies the waters a little.

Messing with the Harry Potter canon is a brave move for everyone, but youd think JK Rowling, the master of the world, could get away with it, right?

Not so, it seemed, after the fans began reacting in not the most positive light to the news the powerful witch was making her introduction in the HP prequel, starring Eddie Redmayne and Johnny Depp.

Twitter was awash with questions, puzzled punters and many WTFs, as fans gathered their pitchforks and came after the author in need of some urgent intel.

I know JKR is bad at math but this is ridiculous, one said, not mincing their words. How is the biography she wrote 4 years ago about McGonagall and how she was a student under Dumbledore fits with mcgonagall being a professor in 1927?!?

@jk_rowling If McGonagall started Hogwarts in 1947, she wouldve been born in 1935, but she makes an appearance as a young adult in Fantastic Beasts 2 which is set in 1927?

@jk_rowling There are reports that Mcgonagall is in CoG. If these are true will it be explained how she is in the film despite supposedly being born in 1935?

— Samuel Falkingham (@samfalkingham) November 6, 2018

McGonagall is going to be in Crimes of Grindelwald… But she wasn't born til 1935… @jk_rowling please explain…

@jk_rowling please tell me the rumors about McGonagall breaking continuity are false!!! I can't wait 11 days! ????

Another said: Why the fuck is Professor McGonagall included in the characters of Fantastic Beast 2? She wasnt even born before the crimes of Grindelwald! How could J.K. Rowling allow this?

Were a very passionate fandom, as you can tell.

The news of McGonagalls surprising presence in the new film was first alerted after reports over the weekend strongly linked Irish actress Fiona Glascott, who starred in Brooklyn, with the role of the witch (played by Dame Maggie Smith in the OG film franchise), who is expected to be in her late 20s or early 30s in The Crimes of Grindelwald.

So, basically, come her time to head up Gryffindor and impress Harry, Ron and Hermione, shed have been well over 100.

But, you know, she IS a witch, so this could fly (pardon the pun) but it sets a dangerous precedent for others to mess with the HP universe. And judging by social media rn, a precedent loyal fans arent too chuffed with.

The mighty author doesnt appear to have addressed the quandary…yet.
