A Breaking Bad movie is coming – but where could the story go from here?
Breaking Bad may have ended over five years ago, but the warped world of Walter White is set to live on with the confirmation today (7 November) that a film with definite ties to the original show is about to enter production.
Series creator Vince Gilligan is spearheading the project, with sources claiming that he will write the script, executively produce and even possibly direct the forthcoming movie.
As you might expect, the news that a BB flick (which currently has the working title Greenbrier) is on its way is just that at the moment – very few other details about the production are currently public knowledge.
But! We do know that filming will start in the shows spiritual home of Albuquerque, New Mexico this month, and that the movie will likely tell the story of the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.

So, its time to put on our speculative hat and cook up (ha) some theories about the kind of angles Gilligan and his team of producers might explore in the Breaking Bad movie.
Itll be a prequel to Breaking Bad
This certainly seems plausible at this early stage.
The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that the film will most definitely be set in the existing Breaking Bad franchise, suggesting that its timeframe almost certainly wont stray too far away its already-established time period: from the start of the Better Call Saul era through to the events of the Breaking Bad finale, which aired back in September 2013.
A new #BreakingBad movie? I do love the show but I'm not certain the need to revisit it, I like the mystery of whether Walter is alive or not and Jesse just getting the hell out of there. How about a prequel with Hank and Steve.

Given the continued success of Better Call Saul – a fifth season has already been commissioned for next year – its clear that the build-up to the grand story of Breaking Bad is a winning formula for Gilligan and his team (more on that in a minute).
Could the creator be tempted to dip into the past once again to produce another BB prequel?
Like Better Call Saul, there will be even more backstory
As the reaction to the acclaimed Breaking Bad spin-off has proven, people are evidently interested in learning more about the backgrounds of any number of the devious characters who were first introduced to us in BBs original run.

If the planned film is indeed a prequel to those famous five seasons of television, then the fact that itll definitely be set in Albuquerque (where filming is due to start in the coming weeks) should mean that well encounter some rather familiar faces come movie time.
Or, it could be set soon after the events of the BB finale
Which would likely mean that – spoiler alert – Walter White *probably* wouldnt be involved, given the dramatic closing events of Felina which ended with Walts final stand. And thats not forgetting his dire cancer prognosis, either.
That brief synopsis of the breaking bad movie sounds like the Jesse Pinkman story getting a final chapter
— Boogie Bousins (@bansky) November 7, 2018
But Jesse Pinkman, Walts right-hand man, managed to escape from the brouhaha of the shoot-out unscathed, laughing manically as he sped away from this dark chapter of his life.
Might his past deeds catch up with him by the time that the new movie is set, though? Hey, theres a thought…
Who is this kidnapped man?
Rumours are already swirling about the tiny proffered synopsis which tantalisingly referenced the escape of a kidnapped man.
Speculation is naturally centring around the idea that the victim of the kidnapping could be Walt Jr. or even, yes, Jesse – though that could just be wishful thinking from BB fans who would do anything to see Aaron Paul reprise his most famous role.
Theres nothing to suggest at the moment, however, that the likes of Paul, RJ Mitte or indeed Bryan Cranston (Walt) are connected to the newly-announced project.

While that doesnt mean that we should totally rule out the prospect of Jesses bitchin return to the screen, it might be wise to come to terms with the notion that the BB film will actually present us with a new protagonist to root for. Speaking of which…
We could be introduced to an array of important new characters in the BB world
Back in July, Gilligan signed a big three-year deal with Sony TV, with the Breaking Bad film the first project to emerge from the renewed partnership. Could the newly-announced movie be just the first of a small number of BB-related films to come out before that deal expires in 2021?
If so, we might just be introduced to a whole set of new characters – think criminal warlords, lovable local drug pushers, or crooked lawyers – who then mingle with any number of familiar faces from the original series.
Right now, the plot possibilities are plentiful – no pressure to deliver then, Vince.
