Son Heung-Min (16', 54') netted a brace for Spurs before Hammers' substitute Lucas Perez (71') pulled a goal back. Fernando Llorente (75') though secured his side's progression to the quarter-finals with his late goal.

After the game, Pochettino reserved his plaudits for centre-back Sanchez, who was the only player to start both matches this week – after Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Monday night.

Pochettino told his club's website: "Hes a beast!"

The manager continued: "It was a very good performance. Im very proud because this game was so complicated and another derby, a derby that in the end we won.

"Its important to go into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and for a lot of players it was a fantastic opportunity to show their quality.

"It was a very competitive game after playing on Monday night. We nearly changed all the players and of course its important, after only 48 hours, to say (well done) to Davinson Sanchez because his effort on Monday and tonight was massive. He showed great mentality."

Spurs will play Arsenal in the quarter-final in the week commencing December 17.
