The Annual Local Government NSW Conference was held in Albury earlier this week. Deputy Mayor Glen Neill, General Manager Derek Francis and Councillors Graham Jackson and Tony Elias joined Councillors from all over the State to debate about 100 motions, and hear the Premier and State and Federal Local Government Ministers address the Conference. Most of the motions dealt with Councils seeking a better deal from State Government on Drought Policy, Transport, Health, Planning, Financial Assistance and winding back regulation. With a close State Election coming in March next year, hopefully a better situation for Councils and the communities they represent will eventuate.
Our thoughts and best wishes go with the Year 12 students from the Nyngan High School as they sit their HSC exams this week. We hope their results will open the path into whatever career they hope to embark on. No doubt the eight students who are heading to China to visit No.15 Middle School in Tongling City later this year are flat out fund raising for their trip. I am sure our community will give them a helping hand as this trip will have lifelong memories for them all.
It is good to know we will have a Rural Counsellor back in the Nyngan office this week. Former Counsellor Victoria Boag has been reappointed by the Central West Board and has a big responsibility in front of her after with the local office being closed for two months. Her previous experience and understanding of current rural issues will ensure clients receive the best assistance.
Remembrance Day 2018 is a little over a fortnight away with the Centenary of the end of the First World War due on November 11. The local Sub Branch have some extra events planned for the day as we remember the end of the war that saw 60,000 Australian Servicemen fail to return home
Council has approached the State and Federal Health Ministers with support from local Doctor Peter Hanley to try and have the Q Fever Vaccine and test substantiality reduced cost wise and become part of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Drought conditions make the spread of this virus more likely and with four cases already reported at our Medical Centre, vaccination is recommended.
Council at its monthly meeting tomorrow will consider a report on the Palais Theatre. Three options are up for consideration in the report, being Demolition of the Palais Theatre, Renovation or Reconstruction. Councillors met with Architect Charles de Beer at an informal workshop on October 8 and indicated an initial preference for reconstructing the Theatre. The cost of reconstruction would be considerably less than renovating, as the cost of repairs of all timber material would be unknown until fully dismantled. Hopefully many community members have indicated their views to prior to the meeting, with the report for consideration available in the Business Paper.
