I was pleased to attend Dubbo Regional Councils Australian Citizenship Ceremony on Friday, at which a number of people became Australian citizens, taking on the rights and responsibilities of joining our nation.
Australia has succeeded as a nation by embracing – and defending – our national values.
We believe in freedom, in the rule of law, and in democracy, and I congratulate those new citizens who have reached this important milestone.
It was my pleasure on Friday to present Dubbo Regional Council with a cheque for $9,091 in funding committed under the Coalition Governments Armistice Centenary Grants program.
Council will use this grant to conduct a public ceremony on Remembrance Day this year (11 November) and install a commemorative sandstone plinth at the Dubbo War Memorial.
Further grants awarded in my electorate under this program have gone to Narromine, Eumungerie, Nyngan, Cobar, Condobolin, Walgett, Tambar Springs and Milparinka.
I encourage all schools, students and communities in my electorate to get involved in Remembrance Day commemorations, to remember those who have suffered or died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
This years Remembrance Day is particularly special, in that it marks the Centenary of the First World War Armistice. On 11 November 1918, four years of brutal conflict ceased. Nearly 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation.
Dubbo has had an important week, with the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, on Wednesday. The city was abuzz with activity and I have no doubt the Duke and Duchess will return to England after their tour with some very special memories of Central West NSW.
