Actor Ezra Miller has said we can expect the character of Albus Dumbledore to be explicitly gay in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Despite early suggestions from director David Yates that Jude Laws Dumbledore would not be depicted as such in the second installment of J.K. Rowlings screenplay, trailers for the upcoming fantasy film have hinted at intimate moments between the character and rumoured love interest Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp.
Speaking with Total Film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Ezra – whose own character in the film franchise, Credence Barebone, has a strong queer subtext – offered fans an insight into what they can expect from the beloved Hogwarts professor.

For me, personally, I find Dumbledores queerness extremely explicit in this film. I mean, all around. He sees Grindelwald, his young lover whos the love of his life; he sees him in the Mirror of Erised. What does the Mirror of Erised show you? Nothing more than the most desperate desire of your heart.
He added: If thats not explicitly gay, I dont know what is.
The actor, who is openly gay himself and regularly speaks out about the prevalence of such characters in the film industry, also weighed in on the controversies surrounding Fantastic Beasts and asked its critics to watch the movie before making a snap judgement.
And he didnt tread lightly.
“Why dont you wait until you see the film before you start talking shit on Twitter? Or wait to make up your own mind about something for once in your life. Do your own research. Make up your own mind, the actor blasted.
Follow your heart, and really, really investigate situations before you identify yourself and pick a side, and start throwing things at the opposition. Because thats whats totally screwing everything up right now. And it polarises us. Were all human, and theres a lot of things we can agree on.
During the chat, the self-confessed Harry Potter superfan also praised J.K. Rowling for the way in which she casually dropped news of Dumbledores sexuality in 2007 following the completion of the Harry Potter novels, after hinting at it in text.

Ezra, who revealed the books helped him deal with homophobic bullying as a child, added that the significance of one of modern societys most beloved childrens character being gay should not be lost.

People have to take a moment and acknowledge the gift that Jo Rowling gave us, he stated.
[She wrote] one of the greatest characters in literary history, one of the most beloved characters across the whole spectrum of civil society… and then, at the end of writing that series, was like, “Oh, yeah, and hes gay. What? Step to me.” She is forever a God for that.
