First aid session for ocean users

South West surfers are encouraged to participate in the free Surfers Rescue 365 course in November.

There will be two held, one at Smiths Beach and the other at Swimmers Beach in Cowaramup Bay.

Over 99 per cent of WAs vast coastline is unpatrolled, with many of the states most spectacular, remote beaches providing idyllic swimming and surfing conditions.

The three hour course delivers life saving training including board rescue, first aid and CPR. The course is supported by City of Busselton and the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Recreation Operations Manager Dylan Brown said while the highly-valued beach lifeguard service would continue at Rivermouth in Margaret River this summer, the Surfers Rescue 365 program ould help to provide opportunity for year-round first response at unmonitored beaches.

“We are fortunate to live in a place where we have access to beautiful and vast stretches of coastline, but unfortunately accidents and injuries can happen at these locations,” he said.

“This program will provide some of the most frequent water users with the skills to save lives and minimise impact for patients until further emergency response help can get there.”

The first session will be held on November 10 at Smiths Beach from 9am-12pm. The second session will be on November 11 at Swimmers Beach from 9am-12pm. Participants are asked to bring their own swimwear/wetsuit, towel and optional for surfboard.

We know that first few minutes of response are the most critical in ensuring favourable outcomes for people who experience trauma or illness.
