Residents urged to check in on their gambling habits this week

WHEN you are being controlled by gambling, not the other way around, it is time to check in on your habits, Lifeline Central West chief executive officer Stephanie Robinson says.

This Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, people are being encouraged to think about their gambling habits.

Ms Robinson has encouraged people to start a conversation with friends of family about their gambling practices.

For those unsure whether they or their family member have a problem gambling habit, she said there were a few signs.

“When your life is more controlled by it than you are controlling it,” Ms Robinson said.

“Also not being able to control the impulse to gamble.”

Lifeline gambling help counsellor Warwick Harrison said the period between the footy grand finals and Melbourne Cup was a great time for people to consider if they need to make any changes to their gambling behaviour.

“It can be hard to avoid increased media coverage and sports betting advertising around this time of year,” he said.

“Regardless of whether you like betting on the occasional long shot or always backing favourites, Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is a great time to check in on your gambling.”

For gambling help counselling in the region call Lifeline Central West on 1300 798 258. This service extends to gamblers and their family and friends.

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week runs from October 8-14 and it is a NSW Government initiative.
