Big dreams on a small scale | Margaret River 9×5 Art Auction

The annual South Regional TAFE Margaret River 9×5 Art Auction fundraiser is on once again, with a new batch of stunning artworks created by South West artists and art students.

The auction is currently open with available pieces on display in the foyer of the Margaret River Region Education Campus administration building, where buyers can place their silent pre-auction bids before the main event on Tuesday October 16.

Art Lecturers Deanne Haddow and Kay Gibson said this years collection featured some quirky and inventive takes on the 9×5 theme, which limits artists to a 9in x 5in panel.

“Weve seen some amazing interpretations this year including some three dimensional works from people like Alan Meyburgh and Karen Sibly,” said Ms Haddow.

“There are also works by well known local artists including Chloe Wilder, Amy Penrose and Connor Griffiths.

“Weve also got some fantastic examples of our emerging artists in the area, with some pieces created by people who are either new to this media or new to art altogether.”

The 9×5 inch size in an Australian tradition in the visual art world, which dates back to the Heidelberg School in Victoria in the late 19th Century.

Ms Gibson said the auction raised funds to support the Visual Art and Craft students end of year exhibition, covering costs of framing and other supplies.

“Framing and finishing pieces can be quite costly and thanks to the support of the local community we are able to help the students show their work and help with other costs through the year.”

“The great thing about these pieces is you dont need a lot of space, because they are smaller they fit almost anywhere,” said Ms Haddow.

“They make great gifts, people who would like to buy some art for someone but dont want to commit to a huge canvas should check these out.”

The South Regional TAFE 9×8 Art Auction will be held in the Margaret River Education Campus boardroom from 5.30pm Tuesday October 16. Refreshments will be provided, entry is free. All artworks have been donated by local artists and students and are available now for bidding ahead of the formal auction.
