Dunsborough Police officer in charge sergeant Peter Bahen has retired from the WA Police after more than 40 years in the job.

Sergeant Bahens colleagues farewelled him at a ceremony on Thursday morning at the Dunsborough Police station where he was praised for his stellar career.

South West superintendent Mick Sutherland formally discharged sergeant Bahen and said it was rare to see an officer retire with two bravery awards.

“We will miss you and the contribution you have made to the WA Police over a long period of time as a committed and dedicated professional police officer,” he said.

“Retirement can be and has been the most meaningful years of life – may you find it.

“It has been an honour working beside you. We wish you and your family well.”

Sergeant Bahen said it was a bittersweet day to see his career come to an end.

“It is not something you want to come to an end, but you realise your own mortality and think all good things must come to an end, and you look forward to starting a new chapter,” he said.

“When I look back on my career I have seen a lot of agony in this job, but on the flip side of that I have seen two little children take their first breaths when I delivered babies.

“Obviously there is agony but there is also a positive side and some great things you experience.”

While he might not be in Dunsborough as much, sergeant Bahen will be just down the road in Margaret River where he will begin his retirement.

“I have been asked to train school children in boxing and volunteering so there is lots to look forward to,” he said.
