Emmerdale spoilers: Will Chas and Paddy stay together after baby death tragedy? Lucy Pargeter reveals all
Its the kind of tragedy that would push even the strongest of couples to breaking point but Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter is hopeful and confident that Chas Dingle and Paddy Kirk can overcome the tragic death of their baby Grace together – even if it will be their most testing time.
An emotional flash forward, fantasy style episode showed how different things would have been for the parents had Grace survived and when Chas was brought back to reality, she said an emotional goodbye to her baby, with Paddy by her side.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Lucy said: Theres too much people splitting up over things. It would be nice to see the reality of them dealing with this trauma as a couple and how each of them deal with it. No one deals with tragedy the same – its whether this love they have for each other will stick them together. I hope it does, even though theyll experience the grief differently. I think there is longevity in seeing both of their stories and seeing the different ways they cope with their grief.
Chas first challenge is painting over the cracks and being strong for her son Aaron Dingles wedding to Robert Sugden. And Lucy revealed that Chas is determined to hold it together and focus on her sons happiness for the day.

She explained: Chas and Paddy have just gone through the most horrific thing. Of course, they hadnt been expecting Grace to have been born yet so she comes a bit early so the wedding happens just after. Aaron and Paddy and others suggest postponing it but its like, no, its been planned. She doesnt want to ruin Aaron and Roberts special day. So she decides to deal with this day and then deal with what happens afterwards. Its very much ignoring what has happened and doing everything to ensure Aaron and Robert have an amazing day.
I think its very much a process shes going through – a box that needs to be ticked. Shes putting the shutters on for the day. She puts her clothes on, her make up on, does her hair – its still there underneath but shes determined to let them have their happy day and will probably melt down afterwards.
And Lucy is really glad to have been able to tackle such a major storyline and an issue relatable to many – and she revealed that viewers have been in touch with her and the show in the wake of some of the powerful scenes.
She shared: Ive been amazed by how many people have been getting in touch with not specifically the same story as Chas and Paddy but so many people have said what has happened to their child or in their pregnancy. It must be so hard seeing it go out on screen – I know some people have chosen not to watch it as its so close to home. Thats why soaps tackle these things because they are real.

Before we did it, I didnt know how wide ranging the problems are that can happen during pregnancy and birth so its good and responsible to get the awareness out but it must also be so harrowing for the people who have been through it to watch it so I just hope that what were doing their story justice.
And she certainly has heaps of praise for her co-star Dominic Brunt. She enthused: I couldnt have asked for anyone better to do this story with. Hes amazing – as a support as well as everything else. The scenes weve done in the hospital – I dont like seeing men cry anyway but we had so many scenes where we had to go off set somewhere and calm down. To see a grown man going through that – hes just been ridiculously amazing and I just love him to bits.
