Charity Dingle has got more than she bargained for when she went to visit her dad Obadiah in Emmerdale in order to get some answers around her broken childhood. She has been left reeling by the fact that her mum Kathleen didnt actually die from cancer but took her own life. As Obadiah explained her mums suicide, Charity was lost for words but hit back that she understood why her mum couldnt cope with life with him.
Obadiah, who was losing his memory due to Parkinsons Disease, was very unapologetic for what happened back when Charity left home – he made excuses and admitted that he only kept looking after her after Kathleen died because he had no other choice.
He also stung Charity by telling her that he hadnt touched a drop of drink since the day she had left but her return was making him want to drink now. Charity asked if he had ever loved her and he was unable to answer but following the revelation about her mum, Charity gained strength and realised that it was never her fault how things turned out – it was her selfish dads.
She told Obadiah that she was not going to feel guilty anymore and walked away from him once and for all, taking the power of her own life back and declaring that she had people around her who love her and kids who she would spend her life adoring.
She also forgave her mum for everything and looked ahead to life. And the next step of that is not wasting anymore time avoiding the depth of her feelings for Vanessa – she makes it clear to her that she is in love and, after all of the support she has been, the pair know this is for keeps.
And Vanessa, like Emmerdale fans, couldnt be prouder of Charity.
