The word superbitch is thrown around a lot these days – well, in the world of soap anyway. But the likes of Janine Butcher in EastEnders and Tracy Barlow in Coronation Street have a lot to thank Emmerdale legend Kim Tate for – she put catty soap women on the map!

Claire King is returning but it has been nearly two decades since we last saw her so for new viewers or for those who happen to forget things after 20 long years, we have pulled together a concise guide to all of the badness that Kim got up to in her previous stay in Emmerdale.

  • Kim was introduced with the Tates in 1989 – she was married to Frank, having previously been a secretary. They had been having an affair while Franks wife Jean – mother to Zoe and Chris – was dying.
  • The family moved to Home Farm and audiences were duped into believing Kim was a nice, homely woman – she even had a few nice words to say to Chris.
  • She soon embarked on an affair with Neil Kincaid though and when Frank found out, he booted his wife out on Christmas Day. Kim dumped Neil soon after.
  • She set up her stables and started her business on her own but her efforts were destroyed by the 1993 plane crash. Her stables were flattened and many of her horses killed in the tragedy.
  • In the wake of the carnage, Frank and Kim were reunited and then married again – but Chris and Zoe were less than happy with her being let back in.

  • Next came Kims infamous affair with Dave Glover – a man she seemed to actually fall for. Its a pity she was married to Frank and he was with Kathy at the time.
  • Kathys brother Nick found out and threatened to expose the truth – so Kim responded by trampling him with her horse and threatening his daughter Alice.
  • When Frank had a heart attack, Kim spied a way to finish him off and seduced him in the hope that sleeping together would induce another heart attack.
  • However, this led to Kim falling pregnant and at the time, she had no idea if the baby was Franks or Daves.
  • Frank overheard Dave talking about the situation with Biff Fowler and this triggered another heart attack. He didnt confront Kim right away but instead hired a private investigator before presenting Kim with the evidence.
  • He started winding Kim up by hiring Tina Dingle as a secretary and allowing her to wear Kims dresses. Frank and Tina got very close and she ended up in a love triangle with him and Biff.
  • Meanwhile, Frank offered Kim £1m to dump Dave and declare her baby son James as his. As it turned out, James was Franks son anyway.
  • Kim and Dave resumed their affair and made plans to run away together – however, when a fire broke out at Home Farm, Dave was killed while saving James life.
  • Kim soon disappeared and a woman matching her description was found dead at the wheel of her car, leading to Frank being arrested. This was Kims exit as Claire King had quit the show but bosses soon lured her back with a new deal and promise of big storylines just days after Kims death had aired.

  • As a result, Kim turned up at Home farm to haunt Frank, explaining that she had paid a prostitute who looked like her to speed around the village in the car. Frank collapsed with a heart attack and instead of passing him the medication which could save his life, Kim applied her lipstick, watched him die and then checked he had stopped breathing with her make-up mirror.
  • Kim inherited half of Home Farm much to the fury of Chris who was insistent that Kim had murdered his dad. Kim soon began an affair with Home Farm shareholder Steve Merchant (played by Paul Opacic, who was Claires love interest in Bad Girls too).
  • Kelly Windsor had told Chris that she was pregnant with his baby and, fearing he could never have more children due to his disability, he begged her to keep it. But during a fight with Kim, Kelly fell down the stairs and lost the baby.
  • Steve and Kims finances ran low so they planned to steal an expensive horse, sell it and replace it with an older one. But while Steve was transporting the horse, he ran over Kathy accidentally.
  • In the hospital, Kim caught Steve trying to suffocate Kathy and stopped him before making Kathy believe that Steve deliberately ran her over and was working alone in the robbery.
  • As Kim set about framing Steve, the trial approached and both Kathy and the police sussed out the truth. But instead of turning up to court, Kim heard that Chris had found the robbery money she had stashed in Franks grave and she paid a visit to Home Farm.
