Nyngan gets a say in new Dubbo Cancer Centre

The Nyngan community has the unique opportunity to view designs for the $35 million Western Cancer Centre Dubbo, which will provide life-saving cancer treatment and diagnostic services much closer to home.

The project team, including Dubbo Oncologist Dr Florian Honeyball, will be on the Nyngan main street (in front of the chemist) to chat to residents and collect feedback that will help inform the design of key public areas on Tuesday, September 4.

“Its important we get community input into the public areas of the hospital to make sure the facility is comfortable and welcoming for patients living in rural and remote areas,” Dr Honeyball said.

The NSW Government is delivering the new $35 million Western Cancer Centre which includes a $25 million contribution from the Federal Government.

When complete the new cancer centre, which will be constructed at Dubbo Hospital, will include 16 chemotherapy spaces, a bunker for radiation treatment and a PET CT scanner for cancer diagnostics.

Dubbo Hospital General Manager, Debbie Bickerton, is looking forward to hearing what the Nyngan community has to say.

“Creating a patient-centred, welcoming and comfortable cancer centre is essential if we want to improve the quality of life and health outcomes of cancer patients. Its especially important for communities like Nyngan because people often need to leave their home and family for long periods of time to access diagnostic services and receive treatment,” Ms Bickerton said.

Residents are encouraged to drop by, chat with project team and provide feedback into areas of the cancer centre such as:

  • Furniture and furnishing in the public waiting areas
  • Signage to find your way around
  • Artwork in the public spaces and front entry
  • Well-being support services that could be provided in the Wellness space of the cancer centre

The Western Cancer Centre is being delivered in conjunction with the $150 million Dubbo Hospital Redevelopment Stages 3 and 4 and forms part of Dubbo Hospitals major expansion and upgrade.

The cancer centre will be constructed in parallel with Stage 4 works.
