The state government has signed a three-year deal to fund the Cape to Cape MTB, which is one of the biggest mountain bike events in the Asia-Pacific region.
The popularity of the four-day mass participation event has significantly grown since its inception in 2008, from 100 riders to now attracting more than 1,200 intrastate, interstate and international competitors.
The 220 kilometre course caters for all different levels of experience and ability, and incorporates the regions sights such as beaches, forests and vineyards.
Tourism minister Paul Papalia said supporting mass-participation events, which encouraged more visitors to regional WA, was one of the key objectives of the state governments Two-Year Action Plan.
“The event not only helps to attract visitors to the region, which provides a boost to the economy and supports local businesses, but it provides the perfect backdrop to showcase the stunning scenery of the South West region with a highlights program shown around the world,” he said.
“Regional events are vital for tourism, which is a key pillar of the state governments plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities.”
The event has successfully attracted high profile mountain bike riders including defending current Cape to Cape champion and three time national XCM champion Brendan Johnston, former Commonwealth Games rider and Cape to Cape champ Andrew Blair, current Australian Cross-Country Champion Cameron Ivory and two-time UCI World Downhill Champion Sam Hill.
The funding is through Tourism WAs Regional Events Program.
