People are fed up with talk of leadership spill: CENTROC chair

PEOPLE are fed up with the revolving door at the Australian Prime Ministers office, Central NSW Councils (CENTROC) chair John Medcalf says.

As talk of a leadership spill continues this week, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he intended to hold a party room meeting on Friday where his fate as leader would be decided.

Mr Medcalf said talk of yet another federal leadership spill was not good for the country.

“I think people are just fed up, especially with the politics thats going on with it,” he said.

“Were having a catastrophic drought in the eastern states and theyre [the community] looking at the government to stimulate the economy and keep the country going and with all this people are now scratching their heads.”

Mr Medcalf said business confidence has also dropped due to the instability of Australias leadership.

“Thats a very, very big issue and its not going to help one iota,” he said.

Mr Medcalf said the medias continual interest in the federal leadership and polls have not helped the situation.

“The media dont help in some ways, especially some of the angles and keeping things alive,” he said.

Mr Medcalf said it was fair that political parties change leadership, however, he did not support the way it had occurred during the past decade of leadership spills within Labor and the Coalition.

“They [politicians] should be doing it with manners,” he said.

In a live telecast on his Facebook page, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the nation would be “appalled” with what was occurring in Parliament.

He called for clarification on whether Minister Peter Dutton, who is touted to be the next Prime Minister, was in fact eligible to sit as a minister.

If the motion is carried I will treat that as a vote of no confidence and I will not stand as a candidate in the ballot.

Mr Turnbull said at Fridays planned party room meeting at midday he would invite a spill motion to be moved.

“If the motion is carried I will treat that as a vote of no confidence and I will not stand as a candidate in the ballot,” he said.

Mr Medcalf said with the “federal government not operating properly” it would damage Australias reputation on a global level.

The Central NSW Councils board is witnessing the leadership crisis first-hand during its planned meeting at Parliament House in Canberra.

Mr Medcalf said the fallout from the leadership has caused the group to be shuffled from room-to-room and planned meetings with ministers did not eventuate.
