Travis Scott became the first artist to pay tribute to Aretha Franklin at the MTV Video Music Awards 2018, before delivering it with a side of shade for Nicki Minaj.

The pair have been in a heated spat since Scott beat Minaj to number one on the official album charts, with the pair allegedly being moved in the original seating plan to opposite sides of the room.

During the ceremony, Travis performed Sicko Mode before concluding his performance with a dedication to the late Aretha Franklin.

Taking to the stage, Travis said: RIP the Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin.

Before he bowed out however, he made it clear exactly who has the number one album on the stage.

Astro World number one right now VMAs make some noise.

Safe to say, people picked up on the not-so-subtle nudge.

Later in the show, Madonna paid tribute to Aretha Franklin with a spectacularly long monologue about how she kickstarted her career.
