Avicii fans have voiced their fury after no tribute to the late DJ was made at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The Swedish DJ, real name Tim Bergling, took his own life in Muscat, Oman, on 20 April. He was 28 years old.

It was expected that the VMAs – held last night in New York City – would air a tribute to the tragic DJ, with reports claiming Rita Ora would sing their collaboration Lonely Together.

However, no tribute was made to Avicii, bar one line from Rita while she was on stage with Bebe Rexha presenting an award.

The 27-year-old said: I just found Avicii and I won Best Dance so please put your hands together for him.

As well as there being no tribute aired, Avicii and Ritas win for Best Dance Video for their collaboration Lonely Together wasnt shown – instead being announced in a round-up clip.

Fans of the Levels hitmaker called out MTV for failing to pay tribute to Avicii:

-madonna fucked up aretha tribute actually celebrating herself
-they didnt say a word for avicii even if he won an award
-they didnt even say a word for demi, whos actually in rehab and it was her birthday
-The Carters were robbed in Video of the year.#VMAs were shit, night. pic.twitter.com/0xUQPym1eU

Anyone gonna point out the the MTV Video Music Awards didnt pay tribute to or even acknowledge Aviciis death? The only person who said anything about it was Rita Ora. So sad. @MTV

This was a mess. Flat performances (only Nicki, Ariana and Jennifer were actually REALLY good) no tribute to Avicii, an embarassing tribute to Aretha Franklin and this wins were a fucking joke. This was terrible. #VMAs

Others were annoyed that an in memoriam section wasnt shown in honour of the music stars who have passed away in the last 12 months, including SHINee star Jonghyun, Dolores ORiordan, Joe Jackson, Craig Mack, Dennis Edwards, Mark E Smith, and Lady Gaga collaborator Rick Genest, aka Zombie Boy.

One tribute that was aired, though, was Madonnas speech about the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, who died last week after a battle with pancreatic cancer – although this was criticised for a whole other reason.

Viewers branded the tribute disrespectful and self-indulgent as they accused Madonna – who turned 60 on the day Aretha died – of making the tribute all about herself.

In her speech, Madge talked about an audition she had as an up-and-coming singer, in which she sang Arethas Natural Woman.
