Sir Michael Caine has offered a definitive answer on the mysterious ending of Inception, an enigma thats plagued film fans for almost 10 years.

The actor, who played lead character Dom Cobbs father-in-law, revealed director Christopher Nolan clarified which scenes were reality and which were all a dream.

Appearing at Film4s Summer Screen, the British actor said: When I got the script for Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to him “I dont understand where the dream is”.

I said, ““When is it the dream and when is it reality?” and he said, “Well, when youre in the scene its reality”.

The debate surrounding Inceptions ending is one that meddled with the minds of many since the film was released in 2010.

Fans have argued whether the final scene takes place in reality or a dream, after lead character Dom Cobb is granted entry to the US and finally reunited with his children.

Audiences witness Dom flick his totem – which spins indefinitely if in a dream but eventually falls in reality – however the scene ends abruptly before they have a chance to see it drop.

Director Christopher Nolan has said he purposely left the ending open to interpretation, but if Sir Michaels admission is anything to go by, his appearance in the final scene confirms there was a happy ending after all.
