FIFA World Cup: Day seven, live scores, results, highlights

Yesterday

Full Time: Portugal 1, Morocco 0

Ronaldo's early goal the difference, as Portugal move to four points and put one foot into the last 16.

A really exciting game, the north Africans having plenty of chances – and it's a real shame that they're going home so soon, they played some great football today.

Morocco the first team to be officially eliminated (Egypt have like a 0.00001% chance of going through, somehow) as regardless of the Spain v Iran result later, they will be on zero points with at least two teams on four or more.

Benatia blazes over!

93rd minute: A foul near halfway sees a long ball lumped into the box – it drops down for the captain who puts his left foot through the ball from about 15 yards out, but it's way over the top of the bar.

Portugal drive down the other end and Ronaldo wins a corner, with time running out.

Ziyech has a shot blocked!

90th minute: He dribbles into the area, cuts back and unleashes a left-footed strike from near the penalty spot, but it's blocked!

The corner results in a foul against Morocco and they have five minutes of injury time to salvage their World Cup.

Not to harp on about VAR, but why wasn't this checked?

Here's that earlier challenge in the box by Fonte that we mentioned – I feel like if this happened anywhere else on the pitch it would have definitely been a foul against the Portuguese defender.

Again, you have to wonder why it is being used in some games but not others – along with Mo Salah last night and Harry Kane the night before, there's been a few clear penalties missed.

Portugal make their last change with Adrien Silva on for Moutinho, and still lead 1-0 with a few minutes to go.

Ronaldo fouled juuuust outside the penalty area!

83rd minute: Benatia is late with a sliding tackle on Ronaldo, and fouls him about as close to the box as can be without giving away a penalty.

Still, it's a free kick just inside the D for Ronaldo, who already has one to his name…but again it's clattered into the wall, before coming back to the Real Madrid star who goes down in the box theatrically, to no whistle.

Ronaldo does the 'video ref' hand motion to the linesman now, is this going to be a thing in every game?

Ziyech cut down in a dangerous area

76th minute: Gelson Martins carelessly loses the ball in his own half, before Ziyech is fouled – they get bodies into the penalty area as the free kick is swung in…

And again Benatia gets there, but it's wide of the post once more. Close call again for Morocco.

Ziyech puts a free kick over the bar – Morocco are running out of time

68th minute: The Ajax midfielder has a dead ball opportunity from about 22 yards, but his left-footed effort is over the top and was far too central, anyway.

Portugal 20 minutes away from a win to go with their first-up draw with Spain, Morocco 20 minutes away from probably being out of the tournament.

Changes for both sides now as Boutaib makes way for Ayoub Kaabi, and Joao Mario is replaced by Bruno Fernandes.

Yesterday

First change for either side comes as Portugal make a move

58th minute: Gelson Martins on for Bernardo Silva – an attacking midfielder off for a more defensive-minded one as Portugal look to hold onto their 1-0 lead.

Another save for Patricio! And then a brilliant second!

54th minute: Belhanda tries to curl one across the face and inside the Portuguese keeper's far post, but can't get enough swerve on the shot and it's comfortably held.

But a minute later, Morocco get a free kick near the right sideline – Ziyech swings it in and Belhanda is again on the end of it, his header looking destined for the bottom corner…but the veteran keeper gets down full length to his left and tips it away for a corner!

Yesterday

Picking up right where we left off

48th minute: Portugal still struggling to find a clear path out of their own end, the only real escape coming when a Moroccan player presses too hard and gives away a foul.

You have to think another goal is coming in this game, and soon – but at which end is the question.

A ball deflects off the boot of Guedes and rolls into the path of Ronaldo from the edge of the box…but it's miles over the bar.
