Bry talks killing off cutesy acoustic persona for full indie band vibes with new EP Love Pop Suicide

Bry is a grafter. Starting off his music career online six years ago with just an acoustic guitar by his side, hes now fully fleshed out his sound, with a whole new band to boot.

Over the past few years, he got the backing of Snow Patrol, toured with TwentyOne Pilots, and rubbed shoulders with Hollywood elite which, by his own admission, was “one of the most bizarre parties hes ever been to.”

But something was missing, and the pressures that come with working with a record label while touring the world took its toll. So for his new EP, hes gone back to basics.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Bry admitted that everything down to the name of new EP Love Pop Suicide was a direct retaliation of everything he wasnt allowed to do under the guidance of a label.

He told us: I called it Love Pop Suicide because I thought it would be, I mean first off they were cool words, and also because this isnt with a record label.

Ive spent years of these people telling me “oh you get your hair cut” and all of this different stuff. They wouldve never let me call my EP Love Pop Suicide. So I just did that as a kind of I get to do what I want.

The risk paid off – and his fans responded in droves.

Launching a crowdfunding page with a target he thought was over-reaching, Bry was stunned to find that he raised £12,000 within three days.

I thought it was going to take three months of actual begging and I thought I would have to put some money in myself, he admitted. Kind of throw in a few grand and pretend it was an anonymous donation from a very rich man.

The result of the fans efforts has resulted in his new four-track, all-band outing – of which the first single, Miserable, was released online on Thursday.

His latest music was influenced by Biffy Clyro to create a more indie-pop sound, which again was something that he felt he couldnt do under the guidance of others.

They let me put songs like that on my album, but they also wanted to make it radio poppy kind of thing to get the singles out, the Irishman explained. Whereas this time…Its still poppy, I like poppy songs, but there was no pressure this time so I just went full indie band, with a very sweet song.

The fourth song is a really sweet song. Its me, a guitar and a violin.

Bry will be releasing the rest of the EP track-by-track over the coming months, with each song moving further away from the kitschy sounds of earlier tracks, such as Adventure Time and Your Life Over Mine.

The only reason I was this kind of this solo acoustic and cute person for two years was because I couldnt afford to bring a band, Bry told us. I really wanted to be like a cool indie guy with a band and big drums and people jumping up and down, instead of like the kind of twee stuff I was doing.

So as soon as I could afford it, I surrounded myself with this big band and everyone was like “Oh My God! He sounds so big all of a sudden.”

I hope, even if I cant afford it, I would probably stick with a band now instead of going back to the acoustics, he added. I mean its nice, but Im not a very talented guitar player, so when you strip me down to my bare bones, people are like “fucking hell, this guy should practice some more”. Whereas with a band, everyone is like “Oh my God! Hes so credible”.

So is he leaving the acoustic music completely behind?

Oh no! I cant, he told us. I would never want to be one of those people that says…you know like Radiohead whatever song they dont play. Im too weak – I dont like the idea of people going home pissed off that I didnt play a song, I would rather just do it and you know, sell my soul to them…because why not?

Im not pretentious enough to not sing some of my songs just because I think Im over them.

Brys new single Miserable is available today.
