Stay safe on road this weekend: minister

NSW Police Minster Troy Grant is urging everyone to take care on the roads this long weekend.

The higher traffic volumes, poor weather and driving in unfamiliar environments meant there was an increased risk on the roads, Mr Grant said.

“Each and every day our men and women in blue attend to motor vehicle incidents and witness the heartbreak of families who have lost a loved one on the road,” he said.

“Your family and friends will forgive you if you are late to an event, but the trauma of losing a loved one will remain with them forever.

“I urge drivers to follow the road rules this long weekend – they may just save your life.”

NSW Police will be cracking down on dangerous drivers this long weekend in a statewide high visibility enforcement operation called Operation Stay Alert.

Double demerits will be enforced by NSW Police from Friday, June 8 until Monday, June 11.

Friday, June 8 is a publicly notified school day and therefore an extra demerit point will be issued for some offences committed in a school zone.

To stay safe drivers are advised to plan their route and rest stops, drive to the conditions, be aware of signs of fatigue, have a Plan B if they intend to drink alcohol and always wear a seatbelt.

There have been 153 people killed on roads so far this year, Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said.

“We know speeding, driving tired and crashes on country roads increase during holiday periods so please slow down, take a rest and dont touch your mobile phone,” she said.

“Think about how your actions affect the safety of yourself and others when you get behind the wheel this weekend.”
