Bulls pretty in pink for Can Assist

The Bogan Bulls turned pink raising $11,320 for Nyngans Can Assist at Saturdays game against Walgett.

The pink jerseys were auctioned off at the clubs Sponsors and Members evening, where the money was then presented to Donna Pumpa from Nyngans Can Assist.

Now five years old Nyngans Can Assist is an organisation which raises money for people in the local community that are affected by cancer.

President of Can Assist Nyngan Lyn Webster said everyone has been touched by cancer in some way or another, and it makes sense to raise money which stays in the shire for local people.

“Nyngan Can Assist was started five years ago with another group of local determined women who would see the need to help our community members with some financial assistance whilst undergoing treatments for cancer,” Ms Webster said.

“All money raised goes to assisting with travel, accommodation, utilities or medical costs.”

Can Assist – formerly known as the Cancer Patients Assistance Fund – began in 1955 by a group of determined women who were nurses, social workers and doctors wives, with a vision to provide accommodation for country patients receiving cancer treatments in Sydney, and to provide support for patients as they accessed treatments to help families in financial distress as a result of cancer.

Today Can Assist has 52 branches across NSW and approximately 3000 members and volunteers who devote their time and energy to fundraise.

Ms Webster says this is a testament to the deep sense of community spirit found in country towns.

Nyngan Can Assist has a number of fundraisers each year, this year they are hosting a High Tea at the Town Hall on Saturday, June 30 from 1.30pm. Tickets are on sale at Innovations for $20.

“We are very thankful for all donations received, which have been very generous. This in turn helps so many people. Local people helping local people,” Ms Webster said.
