Syrian air defence intercepts missiles near Homs: State media

Syrian state media said a military airport near Homs had come under missile attack, which was repelled by its air defence systems on Thursday.

"One of our military airports in the central region was exposed to a hostile missile attack, and our air defence systems confronted the attack and prevented it from achieving its aim," state news agency SANA said.

Earlier, SANA reported that sounds of explosions were heard near the Dabaa airport, about 20km southwest of the central Syrian city of Homs and 10km from the Lebanese border.

Syrian state media did not comment on the origin of the missile attack.

Israel has struck targets in the country many times during its civil war, hitting the Syrian army, Hezbollah and what it has characterised as Iran-backed positions.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, said troops belonging to Hezbollah and other pro-government militias are stationed in the Dabaa military airport. It had no information on possible casualties.

French citizen

Meanwhile, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said it had arrested a French citizen who headed an Islamic State (IS) group unit in Syria and had been involved in the Paris and Nice attacks in 2015 and 2016.

An SDF statement released on Thursday said that the man arrested was Adrien Lionel Kayali, who was born in 1983 and converted to Islam in 2003. It said Kayali, who also goes by the name of Abu Osama, had been arrested and then released in France in 2010 on suspicion of belonging to terrorist organisations.

French media had reported that the captured man was Adrien Guihal, adding that he is wanted in connection with militant activities in France.

SDF media spokesman Mustafa Bali told Reuters Adrien Lionel Kayali and Adrien Guihal were two names for the same man.

French judicial sources told Reuters on Thursday there is an arrest warrant for an Adrien Guihal from 2015, and that he is suspected of having claimed responsibility for attacks in Nice and Magnanville, near Paris, in France in 2016.
