This Saturday, May 19, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is throwing open the doors to hundreds of fire stations across NSW, giving communities a chance to check out the fire trucks, stations and meet their local firefighters.
Fire stations will be open from 10am to 2pm with a range of free activities and educational experiences for everyone.
FRNSW Commissioner, Paul Baxter, who will mark one year in the top job this month, said the community will have an opportunity to learn more about the vital work carried out by firefighters.
“Our firefighters are among the most highly trained in the world and have a very wide range of capabilities,” he said.
“The job involves so much more than firefighting whether it is across the state, across the country, deployments overseas or supporting other emergency services agencies.
“From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to prevention education and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and help anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
On Open Day, firefighters will be on hand to give advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and how to best prepare a home fire escape plan in the lead-up to winter.
Children will be well catered for with the Brigade Kids activity booklet and, in some areas, replica firefighter helmets. More details on which fire stations will be involved on Open Day can be found on the FRNSW website (www.fire.nsw.gov.au).
