Vilakazi: I felt like Messi on that day

Cape Town – Sibusiso Vilakazi says he has grown to become a team player since his big money move from Wits to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

Vilakazi this season clinched his first ever Premiership winners medal having played a big role in Sundowns championship winning side.

The 28-year old said while he enjoyed winning individual accolades while still at Wits, he is happier winning big trophies with the Brazilians, where it all started with the CAF Super Cup, immediately after joining the club.

Reliving one of the biggest moments of his career ahead of Sundowns high profile friendly with Barcelona, Vilakazi said he felt like his idol, Lionel Messi after making a clean sweep at the 2013/14 Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards.

He won the Premiership Footballer of the Year as well as Players' Player of the Season awards.

Vilakazi told Supersport: “I must say, during that day when it happened, I felt like Messi because I almost swept everything that was on the table.

“Obviously that day is gone, but still goes on very deeply. You have moved on and find yourself with Sundowns, a very good team that has special players and you had to fit into that team.

“The most important thing is that its a team that is winning things and its amazing.

“Coach Pitso (Mosimane) has been able to assemble a very good team, but is able to sustain the consistency of players producing every season.”

“What I like about what I have done so far is that I have come in and contributed to the team. Thats the most fulfilling part for me because I contribute to the team and the team comes first. As a collective I need to do my part.”
