RIYADH: UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has expressed her admiration for the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) in helping needy people worldwide.
She was speaking during the meeting with Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, supervisor general of KSRelief in Paris, Azzam Obaid, media adviser at KSRelief headquarters told Arab News on Tuesday.
The two leaders also discussed joint projects in the humanitarian, educational and cultural fields, as well as ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in these areas.
Azoulay commended the humanitarian works by the center, especially in the education sector.
KSRelief signed two executive projects with UNESCO, inked by the KSRelief supervisor general and the UNESCO director-general, the official said.
Obaid said that the first project would provide support for Syrian refugee children living in Lebanon to complete their basic education.
“This support will expand the childrens access to education, encourage them to remain in school and provide skill-based assistance for the mothers of school-aged children,” he said.
The $3 million program will serve about 10,800 refugees in Beirut, Sidon, Beqaa, Al Janoub, Tripoli and Akkar, he said.
The second agreement was aimed at establishing strategic cooperation and joint partnership between the KSRelief and UNESCO in the education sector with a focus on capacity-building and training, exchange of information, academic studies and research, he said.
Al-Rabeeah highlighted the humanitarian and relief projects implemented by the KSRelief and provided the UNESCO director-general with a brief summary of humanitarian projects the center has implemented since its establishment three years ago: 417 projects in 40 countries around the world, especially in Yemen.
KSRelief has implemented 180 educational projects in 32 countries and 48 of these were carried out in partnership with 22 local, regional and international partners. Some of these projects include supporting ministries of education, constructing educational facilities, rehabilitating and equipping educational facilities, providing educational tools and supplies, enabling students to continue their education and supporting and training teachers.
Obaid said that KSReliefs mission was to build strong partnerships with international organizations such as UNESCO to expand and enhance its provision of impartial humanitarian aid and relief.
