JEDDAH: The Saudi coastguard in Makkah region on Sunday helped a 62-year-old Russian sailor from the Seastar Endeavor vessel after he suffered a heart attack.

The vessel carried the Maltese flag and was headed to Egypts Suez Port. The Saudi Border Guards received an email from the vessel reporting that a crewmember required immediate medical attention, said spokesman Col. Saher Al-Harbi.

The vessels location was immediately identified, and the relevant authorities were contacted to act in accordance with the national plan to counter maritime disasters in Saudi waters, he added.

The emergency director at the health department in Jeddah communicated with specialists on the vessel by phone, giving them necessary medical instructions until the patient was reached.

A boat and a medical crew from the Border Guards were assigned to remove the patient from the vessel to Jeddah Islamic Port, said Al-Harbi.

The sailor was then transferred by the Red Crescent to the International Medical Center Hospital in Jeddah for further medical attention.
