Joe McElderry called off a concert with moments to go after learning of a death threat received by the venue.

As the singer, 26, learned of the threat, which was allegedly received by the venue three days earlier, he immediately cancelled his gig at The Empire, Co Durham.

Joe and his team had reportedly not been informed of the threat until there were just moments to go for the performance, and he instantly took action to have the venue evacuated.

The crowd of 500 were then made to leave.

A spokesman for Joe told The Sun: He was mortified to cancel.

Had we known earlier wed have had extra security and it would have gone ahead.

Security was heightened for his gig the following night in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.

At 7.26pm last night I was informed of a suspicious letter that had been intercepted by Consett theatre management three days previous and I learned of some of its content.

Upon hearing this I immediately told the theatre manager that the show would not be going ahead and to get everyone out of the building ASAP.
