Mariah Idrissi Famously Wore a Hijab in a H&M Campaign but It’s the Reason 1 Brand Dropped Her

A British model revealed that she was cut from a big beauty campaign because she wears a hijab.

Mariah Idrissi, 25, first rose to fame in 2015 as the first hijab-wearing woman to feature in an H&M campaign. However, it seems that not everyone in the fashion and beauty industry feels positive about the hijabi representation.

Idrissi revealed on ITV News series, Young, British and Muslim, that she was dropped from a big beauty campaign simply because she wears a hijab. The shocked model said that just as the deal was about to go through, one of the outlets that needed to sign off on the project balked at the idea of using Idrissi in their campaign as they believe it "limits the audience as she's Muslim."

Funny, that. Especially considering the fanfare and admiration British Vogue received when they featured nine diverse women on their May 2017 cover – including 20-year-old Halima Aden, the first hijab-wearing model to appear on the cover of the magazine ever since it was founded in 1916. Supermodel Naomi Campbell called the cover "stunning," "Divine," "Amazing," and "off the charts."

Seems like inclusion is the trend in the industry – one we feel is here to stay, kind of like your favorite LBD dress. And those brands that don't embrace it will feel the sting of rejection all-round – as they deserve, frankly.
