A trip to the movies to see Peter Rabbit turned into a horror show for kids in Australia.
The trailer for A24 horror film Hereditary was shown before a screening Wednesday of Peter Rabbit at Event Cinemas in Innaloo.
“It was dreadful” an audience member told the Sydney Morning Herald.”Very quickly you could tell this was not a kids film. Parents were yelling at the projectionist to stop, covering their kids eyes and ears,” she said. “A few went out to get a staff member but she was overwhelmed and didnt really know what to do. Some parents fled the cinema with their kids in tow.”
The trailer showed scenes of scissors being pinched into a dead pigeons neck, a corpse laid out in a coffin, a boy bloodily smashing his head into a desk and a man on fire.
The theater eventually shut the screen off and offered every audience member a complimentary movie pass to apologize for the mistake. A spokesman for Event Cinemas parent company Event Hospitality & Entertainment Limited told the newspaper they were aware of the issue and it is being “investigated internally to ensure situations like this do not occur again.”
Written and directed by Ari Aster, A24s Hereditary stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Ann Dowd, Milly Shapiro and Alex Wolff in a modern take on the haunted house story — or, perhaps more accurate here, a haunted family tree.
The logline: When Ellen, matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughters family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.
