EXCLUSIVE: Dennis Haysbert has been cast in Fox 2000s Breakthrough (previously titled The Impossible), the faith-based drama based on the true story of Joyce Smiths account of her sons miraculous recovery detailed in her novel The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mothers Faith and Her Childs Resurrection. Roxann Dawson is directing.

Haysbert joins Chrissy Metz, Topher Grace, Josh Lucas, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Isaac Kragten, Ali Skovbye and Taylor Mosby in the film that follows Smith and her 14-year-old son John, who fell through a frozen lake in Missouri one winter; he stayed in the water for 15 minutes before being pulled out. Through prayer and against impossible odds, Joyce asked God for help by her sons ER bedside until his heart started to beat again. She was saying loudly, “Holy God, please send your Holy Spirit to save my son.”

The film is being produced by DeVon Franklin (via Franklin Entertainment) from a script by Grant Nieporte.

Haysbert plays the lead doctor at Cardinal Glennon Hospital who wants to save John but only sees the situation from a medical point of view.

The actor is probably best known for his years as President David Palmer in the long-running Fox series 24 and for being the face and voice of Allstate ads. His most recent film was Kodachrome where he co-starred alongside Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis and Elizabeth Olsen for producers The Gotham Group. That film is currently enjoying a well-reviewed theatrical and Netflix release. In TV, he just finished Reverie for Amblin and NBC which premieres May 30.

Haysbert is repped by Gersh, GS Management and attorney James Jackoway.
