Shawn Mendes managed to ruin a couples romantic on air proposal.

Kinda sorta.

The singer got roped into taking part in helping a couple get engaged on radio, only it went completely wrong and he was left mortified when the woman rejected the romantic proposal.

Only she didnt, and the whole thing was a joke on poor old Shawn, whos such a nice guy he didnt even see it coming.

Capital Breakfast presenter Roman Kemp asked Shawn to help out with the marriage proposal, with listener Rob in the studio preparing to FaceTime his beloved girlfriend Rebecca.

A nervous Rob made the call, and then handed over to Shawn to do the important bit.

Only when Rebecca realised what the call was really for, and not just a chat with her favourite pop star, she had a fit, yelling at Rob that he should have asked her himself and hung up.

Poor Shawn was beside himself, trying to reassure rejected Rob by telling him: Its going to be fine. Dont worry about it. Look, Rob, look at me for a sec. Listen, shes basically just saying why dont you ask her yourself?. Shes not saying no. Its just that shes nervous and scared.

But just as it looked like Shawn might crumple into a heap, Rebecca suddenly sprung up as she and Rob revealed it was all a big old prank.

Oh my god! Thats horrible! My heart was racing! I hate you! I felt so unbelievably bad! the singer cried in relief.

But as Roman put it, as Shawn had agreed to the risky little stunt in the first place, which had it been real could have still gone wrong: Youve cemented yourself as the nicest man in pop.
