Ready Player One Tops $500M Global Box Office, Scores $200M+ In China

Steven Spielbergs Ready Player One has lifted its worldwide score across the $500M threshold. Thats after beginning global rollout on March 28 and reps $120.6M in domestic takings with $379.5M at the international box office. The VR-themed pic from Warner Bros, Amblin and Village Roadshow has done remarkable business in China where it has now topped $200M (RMB 1.3B) to become the 10th biggest U.S. release ever in that market.

Earlier in the run, RP1 had already become WBs biggest movie ever in the Middle Kingdom. It has held terrifically thanks to positive reviews and word of mouth, coupled with a significant gaming culture and nostalgia while social medias seen much discussion about the Anime Easter eggs. The Tye Sheridan-starrer also had some recent holiday play which helped send audiences to the OASIS in droves.

Based on Ernest Clines bestseller, and from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Cline, the movie has seen strong results in key majors including the UK ($21.1M), Korea ($17.7M), France ($16.8M) and Russia ($12M).

Its final market to release was Japan where it kicked into gear this weekend. Well have a breakdown on numbers there tomorrow.

RP1 first screened for a domestic audience at SXSW where the reception was rapturous. The movie opened to over $53M in its four-day Stateside debut. Overseas, it bowed to $128M in 62 markets.

Ahead of release, Spielberg, the titles main draw overseas, traveled to London and Rome for a premiere and to pick up a David di Donatello lifetime achievement award. The director was also in Japan ahead of the opening there and with anticipation at a high.

WB Worldwide President of Marketing, Blair Rich, recently told Deadline, “Theres a hurdle with video game movies, and Steven Spielberg managed to overcome it by making a deeply nostalgic movie. People have fun with the pop culture references, but at the core of Ready Player One is a deeply humanistic Spielberg movie where the underdogs win.”

RP1 was produced by Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Spielberg and Dan Farah. Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Chris deFaria and Bruce Berman are executive producers.

In regards to profit, Deadlines film finance sources have previously told us that a global take of $440M would take Ready Player One to a near breakeven before counting participations, residuals, and interest.
