Margaret River area beaches reopened following shark attacks

Beaches in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River between Ellensbrook and North Point in Gracetown will reopen today from 6pm.

Shire Rangers and Parks and Wildlife Service Rangers closed beaches earlier in the week following two shark incidents near Lefthanders surf break near Gracetown.

“Over the past few days weve been working closely with relevant State Government agencies to determine when beaches can reopen,” said Shire Ranger Coordinator Mick ORegan.

“A coordinated decision has been made to reopen beaches this evening.

“Agencies will be monitoring shark activity over the weekend, and we urge members of the public to please check for beach closure signs in case new closures occur.”

Parts of Hamelin Bay near Augusta have been reopened, however Boranup Beach north of Grace Road to Contos Spring remains closed.

As a precaution, Foul Bay will also remain closed.

Any public shark sightings should be reported to the Water Police on 9442 8600. This number is staffed 24 hours, seven days a week and will activate any required response.
