Hunt: Injuries, new players hampered us

Cape Town – Coach Gavin Hunt has suggested Bidvest Wits would have had a better season had their squad been fully fit and had they not needed to take time to integrate new players.

Hunt also revealed his frustration that striker Amr Gamal, who fell out of favour at the club, did not live up to his lofty expectations.

“I think from pre-season, the whole defence was out at a certain time, then our midfield was out right at the beginning, so that didnt help,” Hunt said, according to the KickOff website.

“Then we had to bring in a lot of new players, which didnt work out, as we know, so thats disappointing. The striker (Amr Gamal) shouldve been the top scorer in South Africa, but that didnt work out, so that was disappointing.”

After a troubled start to the season, which saw them in a relegation dogfight heading into 2018, Wits revitalised their season.

However, their fortunes have once again taken a turn for the worse in recent fixtures, with their last two league games ending in defeats to Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns.

“We got back a lot of the team that played last year for the second round, and won 21 points in 10 games, better than anybody, which was more than two points a game,” Hunt recalled.

“But then we go and lose to Ajax, which was disappointing.”

Defending champions Wits currently sit 10th on the league table.
