Even some diehard Morrissey fans are peeved off with The Smiths frontman at the moment.

The 58-year-old has become more known for his controversial interviews than his solo music these days, and his most recent chat on a Morrissey fan site has public opinion plummeting even further.

Speaking to John Riggers for Morrissey Central, the This Charming Man singer mocked London mayor Sadiq Khan for not talking properly, claimed halal was evil, and said that Hilter was a lefty.

So its no wonder Shut Up Morrissey merch is back in vogue.

Manchester-based Verity Longley has been inundated with requests for her Shut Up Morrissey tote bags, which sold out and raised £1730 for the Manchester bombing victims fund last year.

Verity printed the colourful bags in 2016 after The Smiths were played loudly from a festival near her house.

However, the popularity of the bags, which Verity sold on her Etsy account, shot up when Morrissey started issuing controversial comment after comment.

Verity told BBC News: As soon as he has an interview, I get messages, and yesterday I had quite a lot of messages. And I went, you know what, why not?

I couldnt believe what he said yesterday. Like all the stuff he said about the way Sadiq Khan speaks. Thats the way I speak! Its just British.

The bags have already sold out on Veritys Etsy, with half of the profits going towards Greater Manchester Immigration Aid.

Hitting back at Morrissey fans who were unhappy about the bags, Verity tweeted: Also for anyone who isnt impressed by the totes a) it was just a joke to start & I only responded to people asking for more, 2) look at all the money they raised!, d) chill out, its a bit of fun.

If Im a snowflake for raising money for charity then at least Im a damn avalanche.

The reaction to Morrisseys latest interview has been pretty darn negative, with many people lamenting the loss of their teenage musical hero.

In the interview, he said of Sadiq Khan: The Mayor of London tells us about ”Neighborhood policin” – what is “policin”? He tells us London is an “amazin” city. What is “amazin”? This is the Mayor of London! And he cannot talk properly!

I saw an interview where he was discussing mental health, and he repeatedly said “menel” … he could not say the words mental health. The Mayor of London! Civilisation is over!

Morrissey then went on to claim that perpetrators of acid attacks are treated as victims, saying: All of the attacks are non-white, and so they cannot be truthfully addressed by the British government or the Met Police or the BBC because of political correctness.
