Kendrick Lamar has been awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Its the first non-classical or jazz work to win the award making him the first rapper to take the price home.
The hitmaker was given the prestigious honor for his 2017 studio album DAMN., described by the Pulitzer Prize committee as a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.
Last years prize in the category went to composer Dun Yus album Angels Bone, and the past several decades of awards in the category have largely gone to instrumental LPs.
DAMN. was critically acclaimed upon its release and the 30-year-olds fourth studio album and went on to win Best Rap album of the year at the Grammys.

Kendrick recently appeared at Coachella, where he performed alongside SZA and Vince Staples.
Coachella was already going to be a pretty star-studded affair, with Beyonce, The Weeknd and Eminem headlining the festival.
