Centenary Grant delivers important boost to eco-programs

Nature Conservation Margaret River is celebrating the receipt of a significant donation this month, one which will assure the future of their popular Our Patch education program for another year.

According to Tracey Muir, Education Officer at the regional environmental group, the Commonwealth Bank Centenary Grant will provide a much-needed boost to the growing program.

“We have now taken on students from the new Rapids Landing Primary School, which means all primary schools in the Shire are now part of Our Patch and receive the benefits of the program.”

The regular sessions involve an in-depth understanding of the students own backyards, with excursions and environmental work like planting, waterways management and dune care.

“The education that the students receive give them a really solid foundation of environmental awareness as well as a genuine interest in how the world works around them,” Ms Muir said.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Centenary Grant, it represents an important donation to the program that cant survive without this sort of assistance. Its great to see a local bank branch supporting local initiatives like this one.”

CBA Margaret River branch manager Julie Kiker said this years round of grants were given special consideration. More than 13,000 current and retired bank employees contribute to the program, with the Commonwealth Bank chipping in up to $2 million each year.

“Were thrilled to be able to support organisations like Nature Conservation in the important work they do for our local community,” Ms Kiker said.

While grant recipients are usually selected without personal input from banking staff, the centenary milestone meant a change in terms for this years allocations.

“Its especially meaningful that we are able to celebrate 100 years of employee giving by nominating an organisation to receive a grant in our own community.”

In total, 1000 organisations around the country will receive a Centenary Grant.
