Artist adds buzz to Margaret River coffee house

A bright and bold new mural has been created on the north wall of Yahavas Margaret River site as part of a collaboration between the coffee crew and the Emergence Creative Festival.

Responding to a call out from Emergence Creatives Mat Lewis earlier this month, Yahava Koffeeworks Manager Shae Dillon said she jumped at the chance to have London-based, Narrogin-born artist Jerome Davenport create a piece for the building.

“I was working at another venue a few years ago when a mural was created for Emergence and it just injects so much life and magic into an otherwise unremarkable wall,” she said.

A passionate campaign to win over the powers that be followed – which Dillon said was a relatively easy task. “Its just really cool to have someone like Jerome in town and able to create something like this which is a custom design, its all about Yahava and coffee and I think shes absolutely beautiful!”

The design is based on a traditional Colombian coffee picker and was created over two days by Davenport, who is known around the world for his impressive large scale works.

Surprisingly, the artist is moderately colour blind, and relies on close attention to the colours marked on his huge collection of spray paint cans.

“I dont really let it bother me, its not something I notice that much but it does mean I have to be careful and think about it a bit more when I am painting with reds, browns and earthy colours,” Davenport said.

”I prefer to work with blues and greys and those tones because they are easier to differentiate but something like this presents a good challenge and Im having fun with it.”

The design was a collaboration between the cafe and the artist, with a number of images sourced as inspiration for the earthy graphics which feature red and green coffee beans and the hands and face of the wizened coffee grower.

"Were beside ourselves, the detail is unbelievable, and we are so grateful for this magnificent piece of art to be on our wall,” said Dillon.
