Cate Blanchett is the latest actor to speak out about allegations aimed at Woody Allen, telling CNN she didn’t know about the claim of abuse leveled at the filmmaker when they worked together. Blanchett, who won a best actress Oscar for her role in Allen’s 2013 drama Blue Jasmine, was asked during the network’s Amanpour show how she could marry being a #MeToo supporter with “staying silent” about working with the director. The actress replied, “I don’t think I’ve stayed silent at all. At the time that I worked with Woody Allen, I knew nothing of the allegations. At the time, I said it’s a very painful and complicated situation for the family, which I hope they have the ability to resolve.”

Dylan Farrow, Allen’s daughter, has accused him of molesting her when she was a child. Allen denies the claim. Despite a state attorney saying he had “probable cause” to prosecute, the director was never put on trial.

During the interview, Blanchett went on to discuss the need for such allegations to be made and resolved through the courts of law. “If these allegations need to be re-examined which, in my understanding, they’ve been through court, then I’m a big believer in the justice system and setting legal precedents,” she said. “If the case needs to be reopened, I am absolutely, wholeheartedly in support of that.”

The Carol and Ocean’s 8 star also pointed out that social media shouldn’t be the “judge and jury” when it comes to harassment and abuse cases. “I feel that these things need to go into court, so if these abuses have happened, the person is prosecuted and so someone who is not in the shiny industry that I am can use that legal precedent to protect themselves,” she commented. “Always, in my industry or any other industry, they’re preyed upon because they’re vulnerable.”

Blanchett is the latest actor to add her voice to the clamor surrounding Allen’s alleged abuse. Michael Caine, Timothee Chalamet, Mira Sorvino, Greta Gerwig and Colin Firth are among those who have spoken out on the subject.
